Custom design refers to any tile or flooring installation that goes beyond a standard straight lay. This includes pattern layouts (herringbone, chevron, diagonal, basketweave), medallion and border inlays, mosaic tile work, natural stone installation, large format tile with hairline joints, 3D tile, and feature wall applications. If you have a specific vision that isn't a basic grid pattern, it's a custom design project.

Custom design work is always quoted on a project basis — there's no standard per-sq-ft rate because complexity varies significantly. Pattern layouts typically add 20–40% to standard installation pricing. Medallions and inlays are quoted individually based on size and complexity. We are a labor-only company — we install the materials you purchase. For custom design projects, we provide detailed specifications for exactly what you need to purchase, including tile sizes, quantities (with waste factor), grout colors, and any specialty materials. We're happy to advise on sourcing and can recommend suppliers who carry the materials your design requires.

Yes — herringbone and chevron are two of our most requested custom patterns and we execute them on both floors and walls. The key to a great herringbone or chevron install is precise layout planning before installation begins — we calculate the starting point so the pattern flows correctly through doorways and terminates cleanly at walls. This takes experience and patience that not all installers have.

Yes — natural stone is one of our specialties and requires handling that porcelain tile does not. Marble requires careful cutting to avoid chipping, specific thinset to prevent staining, and professional sealing after installation. Travertine requires filling, leveling, and sealing. Slate varies significantly by type. We've installed all these materials and will advise you on what's required for your specific stone and application.

Custom work takes longer than standard installation — that's the nature of precision. A herringbone floor in an average room might take 3–5 days vs 2–3 for a straight lay. A marble bathroom installation could run 5–8 days. A medallion inlay in an entryway might be a standalone 2-day project. We'll give you a realistic timeline in your estimate — and we don't rush custom work.
